I’ve talked a little bit about my postpartum hair issues in this post, but one way that I’ve been counteracting my thinner hair is with a rosemary essential oil hair growth spray.
Rosemary essential oil helps your hair grow faster and can even lead to thicker/fuller hair, so it was a great way for me to support my thinner hair (and help my awkward hair growth areas grow out faster).

This study showed that rosemary essential oil worked just as well as a leading hair growth drug without some of the side effects that the drug produced in users. I think it’s such a cool finding to be able to go a more natural route (with even better results) than a drug.
Anyway, here’s the easy recipe for rosemary hair growth spray that I’ve been using in case you want to try it for yourself!
Supplies:
-10 drops rosemary essential oil
-1/2 teaspoon Solubol or a carrier oil
-4 ounces distilled water
–4 ounces spray bottle (amber bottles like this will keep the essential oil potent longer)
–mini funnel (optional but helpful)

Add 10 drops of rosemary essential oil to a 1/2 teaspoon and fill the rest of the teaspoon with Solubol or a carrier oil.
Pour your oils into your bottle and fill the rest of the bottle to the top with water.
Give your bottle a shake and spray directly into roots and then rub it in with your fingers a bit. It makes my hair look a little wonky when it dries (it kind of gives it that wet look even when dry), so I tend to do it before bed and then fix my hair again the next day.
Spray into hair once a day.
It’s true that it’s a little hard to tell for sure how much this works unless you only did it on half your head and compared it to the half you didn’t do it on.
But, I will say that I have always had trouble growing out my hair and I definitely noticed it growing way faster than usual.
How Long Does It Take to See Results?
This study says that the results were much more visible six months after starting treatments versus three months in, so I would stick with it a bit before giving up if you don’t see a difference right away.
And with any essential oil recipe, stop using it if you notice any adverse reactions.
Hope this simple recipe helps your hair look its best, too! xo. Laura

Shall I spray it daily
Yes- that’s what I do!
What size of amber bottle are you using when you put your oils and then topping off with distilled water? Is it a 2 oz bottle or 4 oz bottle? Thanks.
Wow very informative! I think that it is so great to learn about which herbs can help with what. We often fail to realize that many solutions to our ailments are located right in our backyard! Cooking with rosemary is also a great addition in adding it to your daily lifestyle and diet. Thank you for this great post and when you get a chance, check out my article on using coconut oil for hair growth and thickness here, https://hairsthescoop.com/how-to-use-coconut-oil-for-hair-growth-and-thickness/.
What are some other carrier oils that can be used? Would witch hazel or fractionated coconut oil work?
Castor oil
Thank you for providing clinical evidence for a product and not just anecdotes. It looks like this was first posted 2 years ago. Are you still using it daily? Seems like 2 years is a good long time to trial something. (Apologies if I missed that in the post.)
Thanks for this recipe! I’ve recently started using rosemary oil in jojoba to massage into my scalp but that leaves my hair oily and needs to be washed out, so I like the idea of a more water-based spray that can be used every day.
Any idea how long this mixture will keep without going bad? Should it be kept in the fridge? I’m considering using Vitamin E as the carrier oil as it can act as a preservative.
I’ve seen that sprays like this will last around 6 months without being in the fridge, but if it starts to smell different (or not smell much at all anymore) I would make a fresh batch
What do you use for a Solubol or a carrier oil?
I used Solubol!
Laura
The concentration of rosemary oil is too low. The study you cited used 2% rosemary oil, which equates to a 1/2 teaspoon per 4 oz, which is about 15-16 drops from my rosemary oil drip bottle. Then add to the carrier oil and mix with the water.
thanks for the correction on this i did 20 drops to be sure! lol
Just made this now, and added 10 drops for a total of 20 in my carrier oil. I used Castor oil as my carrier oil, do you think that’s okay? Thank you so much!
Doesn’t oil and water not mix? Would I need to shake this then spray?
You can make a spray or put drops of rosemary essential oil straight into your shampoo bottle. I’ve used the oil straight into my shampoo bottle, probably about 6-8 drops for the average size bottle. I hope this helps as well!
Use it on dry or damp hair? What is better?
Does this formula have to be washed out of your hair every day?
Wow – I never knew this! I love this DIY natural solution. Thanks for sharing!
I know you haven’t been using this that long so you may not have an answer… BUT, Do you know if it has “reverse” effects? Like if I use it for a year, then stop using will my hair thin back out?
This looks fairly simple. Thanks for the recipe Laura. Now, let’s see how much I can grow 😀
Well, at least your hair smells good, right? That could also be a reason to try this. My hair grows like crazy, so I don’t have to use this for hair growth.

This is what I use on my hair fresh Rosemary, but instead of the essential oil I soak fresh Rosemary in Extra Virgin Olive Oil and let it draw out the Rosemary naturally for about 1 month, until you can smell the Rosemary scent…fyi I also use the oil to cook with.
lso use it to cook with.
How much oil and rosemary did u use?
I definitely need to try this! I feel as though my hair has been falling out a bit recently, so that will definitely come in handy. Thanks for sharing, hope you are having a great day!!
