But no more! It’s so easy and delicious. Plus, you can customize or serve this chicken parmesan recipe the way you like.

I like my chicken parm thin and crispy served with extra tomato sauce on the side with garlic bread. But you could also serve this over noodles or rice or all on it’s own—it’s that good and filling!

Ingredients

  • Chicken – skinless chicken breast
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • All-purpose flour
  • Milk
  • Italian bread crumbs
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Canola oil or Vegetable oil
  • Tomato sauce – any kind you like: homemade marinara sauce, vodka sauce, Pomodoro sauce
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil

You may also want some French bread, spaghetti noodles, or rice to serve with.

How to make Chicken Parmesan

First, cut the chicken breasts in half, lengthwise. While some people like to pound the chicken with a meat mallet or rolling pin to thin it I simply cut the pieces in half.

Generously season each side of the chicken cutlets with salt and pepper. Dip the pieces in flour, coating the outside. Then dip in milk. Then dip in Italian bread crumbs. I will use a shallow bowl, pie pan, or plates with a lip to do this in.

In a large saucepan or skillet, add enough oil to pan fry (about 1/2 inch or more). Over medium-high heat cook the breaded chicken for two minutes on each side.

Place the chicken in a lightly oiled baking dish or baking sheet and top with tomato sauce, grated Parmesan cheese and mozzarella. Bake in the oven at 450°F for 10-12 minutes. The cheese should be melty and the chicken golden brown. Top with fresh basil and serve.

Tips & Substitutions

  • For the breading, you can use two eggs whisked together instead of milk if you prefer. I think this makes the breading a little thicker, but it works well. Another option is buttermilk in place of the milk, this simply adds a bit more flavor and tanginess.
  • Bonus points – add Parmesan to the breading! Use the powdery kind and mix it in with the Italian bread crumbs.
  • To check your chicken is done, use a meat thermometer and check the thickest piece, it should reach 160°F.
  • Warm extra sauce to serve on the side – this keeps the chicken parmesan from getting soggy as it bakes.
  • I like fresh basil but you could also use fresh parsley, rosemary or thyme. Another addition for a little heat is to sprinkle on some red pepper flakes.
  • You can store any leftovers in an airtight container fin the refrigerator for a couple days. I don’t think chicken parm makes the best leftovers IMO. So, if we do have leftovers, what I do is chop it up into small pieces to toss in with pasta or over a salad. I feel this works better than trying to recreate the meal by rewarming.

  • Corn Chex cereal: The Corn Chex flavor adds a bit of sweetness to the mix.
  • Rice Chex cereal: The lightest cereal of the bunch, Rice Chex is a great base for the flavored butter mixture and adds a good crunch
  • Wheat Chex cereal: Wheat Chex cereal is smaller and crisper with a deeper flavor. If you don’t want to buy three flavors, you can simply add more of the corn and rice to make up for skipping the wheat.
  • Bagel chips: Regular-sized bagel chips can be broken up with your hands to about 1″ pieces if they aren’t the mini size, and they really add a textured crunch to the mix. You can also sub out or add some rye chips if you can find them.

You can customize the sweetness level as well as make this creamy drink more or less spiced to your preferences.

I am a big fan of custard generally. And eggnog is essentially a spiced custard drink as it is made of mostly milk and egg yolks. This classic eggnog recipe is decadent and delicious and feels absolutely perfect for the holiday season.

Ingredients

  • Egg yolks
  • Granulated white sugar
  • Heavy cream
  • Milk
  • Vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon stick

Directions

In a small mixing bowl, store the egg yolks, separating them from the whites. Set aside.

In a medium saucepan, add the sugar, cream, milk, nutmeg, vanilla extract and cinnamon stick. Whisk over low/medium heat until very warm and the sugar has fully dissolved.

  • Feel free to add more nutmeg, cinnamon or other spices like cloves to this recipe! Pumpkin pie spice might be a nice addition.
  • What about spiked eggnog?! You can add any liquor that goes well with cinnamon; so think bourbon, whiskey, brandy, rum or Kahlua. Add one shot (1.5 to 2 ounces) to a serving.
  • To add some caffeine you can add 1 to 2 shots of espresso to serving of this and top with whipped cream!

I suspect part of this was how you could set the crock pot in the morning, before getting the kids ready and leaving for church and hours later the meal would be ready to serve. And I must admit, as a child I did not at all appreciate this simple, classic meal.

This pot roast recipe is simple and only requires a handful of ingredients. It’s inexpensive, as chuck roast is not a super pricey cut of beef. It’s easy to make, other than searing the meat you pretty much just throw everything in a slow cooker and press the button. But for me this traditional pot roast recipe is very nostalgic and comforting. Plus, it has great flavors and the tender meat can be easily shredded with a fork.

  • If I make this for a holiday meal, I usually throw in some herbs like fresh thyme or fresh rosemary. 
  • I pretty much stick to potatoes and carrots as the side vegetables that get cooked with this as that’s what my family did growing up. But, any root vegetable or hardy veggie can work well here, like garlic, turnips, parsnips, celery, yams or beets.
  • You can use the braising liquid from the slow cooker to make a gravy by whisking in a little butter and all-purpose flour over medium heat until thickened.

If you want even more flavor, you can add a little soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce or liquid smoke. Or throw in some garlic powder and a few bay leaves. 
If I make this for a holiday meal, I usually throw in some herbs like fresh thyme or fresh rosemary. 
I pretty much stick to potatoes and carrots as the side vegetables that get cooked with this as that’s what my family did growing up. But, any root vegetable or hardy veggie can work well here, like garlic, turnips, parsnips, celery, yams or beets.
You can use the braising liquid from the slow cooker to make a gravy by whisking in a little butter and all-purpose flour over medium heat until thickened.

What is macrame?

Macrame is a crafting technique where you create a texture through making a series of knots and loops with either rope, yarn, string, or cords. The top of your project is secured onto either a mounting ring or tied to a stick or dowel and then the pattern is created through handmade knots.

Often the hobby of macrame is combined with other crafting mediums like weaving or knitting, but pure macrame is when the full piece is made of knots made by hand.

What’s the history of macrame?

Macrame may go back as far as the ancient Persians and Babylonians who used macrame-like knotting in artifacts in centuries BC.

The more modern macrame was brought to the west from more Arabic countries who mainly used the knots in the 13th century to tie ends in items like rugs, shawls, or other items that had fringe. By the 17th century, ladies in waiting for Queen Mary II used the technique as the pastime spread through England.

Sailors started to use the macrame knots to pass the time on ships and would even trade made items like belts or hammocks once they got to shore, which also helped the craft spread through Europe. Macrame remained popular through the 17th and 18th centuries until the Industrial Revolution brought about the sewing machine and then the technique fell out of favor until the 1960s and ’70s brought the craft back to popularity as part of the handmade movement.

The word “macrame” either comes from the Arabic word “migramah,” meaning ornamental fringe or it may also come from the Turkish word “makrama,” which refers to a towel or napkin.

Is macrame easy or hard to learn?

Good news! While it may look complicated, macrame is actually very easy to learn and it’s very similar to making friendship bracelets if you remember doing those as a kid.

There are a few basic knots that we will teach you, and once you get those down you’ll be able to make almost any macrame project you want!

How long does it take to complete a macrame project?

The time needed to complete a macrame project will vary greatly depending on your level of skill (your first macrame project will take more time and experts will knot much faster), material, size, and complexity of your project.

While smaller/simpler projects can definitely be completed in a short afternoon, you may need several hours spread over a few days for larger wall hangings.

What kind of cord do you use for macrame?

There are several types of macrame cord that you can use for your macrame project.

  • Rope: The twisted strands of cotton cord rope give macrame projects durability and you’ll get a defined thick knot that is unlikely to unravel. The most common kinds are twisted three-ply and braided six-ply ropes for macrame and rope comes in a large variety of thickness for larger projects as well.
  • String: A string is a much finer twisted strand compared to rope so you get a smaller and softer look than with rope. Your knots will also be much smaller so it can be better for finer, more delicate projects.
  • Yarn: While yarn is often used for knitting, you can also use it for macrame. Wool, acrylic, and hemp are common bases for yarn and this option provides the biggest color range.
  • Waxed cord: A waxed cord is smaller in diameter than a rope and it is coated in beeswax to make the cord more waterproof. The wax also strengthens the cord so it makes for strong knots as well.

How much macrame cord do you need for a project?

When measuring out how much cord you need for your macrame project, you’ll want to determine the approximate length of your finished project and cut your cords 4 times that length.

If the cord needs to be folded in half for the project, then you want to cut the cord 8 times the finished length.

What supplies do you need for macrame?

To make your macrame project, you’ll want the following items:

  • Macrame cord
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • A stick/rod or a mounting ring (a metal hoop) to hang your project on
  • Wooden beads or other beads for decoration (optional)

TIP: Before you cut your cord when working with yarn or rope, use masking tape and wrap it around the yarn or rope. This will keep the end of the cord from unraveling while you work.

5 Basic Macrame Knots

While there are more than five knots you can use in macrame, if you practice these five simple knots, there are so many projects you’ll be able to tackle right away.

1. Lark’s Head (aka Cow Hitch Knot)

A Lark’s Head knot is so easy! Fold your string in half and place the halfway loop behind your hanging rod.

Slip your two string tails through the top loop and pull.

2. Square Knot

Tie two Lark’s Heads knots side by side on your rod. This knot uses only the strands on the outer left and right edges and the middle two strands stay put.

Take the strand all the way on the left and cross it over the middle two strands but then behind the strand all the way on the right. It will look like a number “4.”

Next, take the right strand, keeping it over the strand that came from the left, and go behind the middle two strands coming out where the hole in the “4” was created in the previous step. Pull that knot tight to the top.

Now you’ll repeat the process backwards by taking the right strand and creating a backwards “4” that goes over the middle two strands and under the strand on the left.

Take the strand on the left, keeping it over the strand that just came from the right, go behind the middle strands and come out again where the hole in the backwards “4” was created.

Pull strands tight and you’ll see a square knot!

3. Spiral Knot

The spiral knot is basically the same as the square knot except that you keep making your “4” shape in one direction so it creates a spiral shape.

Tie two Lark’s Heads knots side by side on your rod and continue to make your first knot like your would with a square knot.

Rather than reverse the direction to complete a square knot, keep making the same knot over and over, pulling each knot tight to the top.

As you make more knots, you’ll see the spiral pattern start to emerge.

4. Berry Knot

Start by making a square knot but when you tie your knot at the top, leave a little room above the knot so you can turn your tails through that hole later.

Make two more square knots so you have three square knots in a row.

Take the tails of your cords and push them all through the small hole in the middle you left above your first square knot.

Pull the cords all the way through and you’ll see that your square knots have created a ball-like berry shape.

5. Double Half-Hitch Knot (DHH)

This knot is often used to create lines in your work and you’ll want to start with at least four Lark’s Head knots side by side. The outermost left cord will be your working cord and the next three cords in line will be your holding cords.

Use your left cord to loop around the first holding cord so that the loop is facing down and the tie of the loop is facing up.

Tighten the loop to the top.

Repeat the action so you have two loops tied at the top of the cord.

Take your working cord and start to tie loops on the second holding cord in line and tie two loops at the top of that cord.

Repeat again tying two loops with your working cord onto the third holding cord and then let your working cord hang (it should now be the fourth cord in near the middle of your project).

Now you just repeat the process backwards on the other side by using the outermost cord on your right side as your working cord and tying two loops on each of the next three hanging cords.

Now you should have both your working cords in the middle of your work.

Now you’ll tie one last Double Half-Hitch Knot by using your left working cord to tie a loop around what was your right working cord.

Avoid these common macrame mistakes:

  • Cutting cord too short: Rather than just eyeballing your cord, make sure you are measuring that you have at least four times the full length of your finished project to ensure you won’t run out! There’s nothing worse than not being done with your piece and suddenly you run out of cord.
  • Pulling knots too tight: It’s a very similar thing with friendship bracelets, that if you are pulling your knots too tight, then your knots will look deformed and your project will start to twist and curl. Pull your knots just snug enough without over tightening and try to keep all the knots the tied at the same tightness. As you start your projects, you’ll know if your knots are too tight if your project curls and you’ll want to start over not pulling your knots so hard.
  • Not practicing/giving up: Like all new skills, it takes time to feel more confident and take on harder and bigger projects, so keep practicing and don’t give up as you get the hang of it!

I love to make candles for myself, as I almost always have a candle burning in my kitchen every evening. I also love to give homemade candles as gifts.

A DIY candle makes a great housewarming gift, wedding gift, birthday, Mother’s Day, or holiday gift. Or at least I think so, as I LOVE candles!

Candle Making Supplies – Basics

How to Make a Candle – the Basics

  1. Measure out your wax. The easiest way to do this is to fill your container that will become your candle with the wax pellets. Then, use your kitchen scale to find the weight so you know how much scent oil to use.
  2. In your melting pot, add the wax.
  3. In your larger pot, add enough water so it will cover your melting pot at least halfway.
  4. Heat the larger pot with the water and melting pot over medium heat. This is essentially a double boiler, like you might use to melt chocolate. While you can melt the wax in the melting pot directly, using a double boiler ensures the wax doesn’t overheat.
  5. Heat the wax to 185°F. Use your thermometer to check.
  6. Stir in the scent oil so it gets well distributed.
  7. Turn off the heat and allow your wax mixture to cool to 125°F before pouring.
  8. While the wax melts (or as it cools off), add your wick to the container. Use a wick sticker or hot glue to stick the metal bottom of the wick to the bottom center of the container. Then, use a clothespin or stick to wrap the top of the wick around so it will stay center once you pour in the wax.
  9. Pour the wax into your container. If the wick shifts around, fix it while the wax is still hot and very liquid.
  10. Once your candle hardens, you’re ready to trim the wick and use it!

Types of Wax & Wicks

While there are other types of waxes and wicks beyond those listed above, these are likely what you will want to use as a beginner.

What is Scent Throw?

Scent throw is exactly what it sounds like; it is the radius around your candle where the scent will reach as it burns. There are four factors that affect scent throw:

  • The type of wax
  • Thickness of the wick
  • Amount of scent oil used
  • Temperature of the wax when you add the scent oil

While you may want to use different types of waxes for cost or health reasons, just know that generally the hotter the melting point of the wax the smaller the scent throw will be.

As far as how much scent oil to add, you may think adding more will always mean a larger scent throw. Not true. If you add too much oil, it can weigh down in the wax.

You should aim for 1 ounce of scent oil for every 1 pound of wax (generally). This is why you may want to use a kitchen scale once you’ve measured how much wax will fit your container so you can best calculate how much scent oil to use.

The texture is tender and a little bit chewy on the inside, almost custard like, and it has a crispy shell. They also puff up so they almost look like a little soufflé, which makes them feel fancy and special.

Traditional Yorkshire puddings originates from northern England (Yorkshire) likely in the early 1700s. While there is some debate over this, I feel Yorkshire pudding is essentially the same thing as Popovers, which is what I tend to call them more often since I am based in Midwest America. Whatever you call them, these make a great addition to any dinner, much like a dinner roll.

Related: While this Yorkshire pudding recipe can be served with gravy, I am partial to serving with honey butter or garlic butter for special occasions.

Ingredients

  • Large eggs
  • All-purpose flour
  • Whole milk
  • Salt

I use nonstick cooking spray to prep the baking pans, but you could also use butter, clarified butter, vegetable oil, shortening or beef drippings.

How to make Yorkshire Pudding

In a medium sized mixing bowl, whisk together all the ingredients. Refrigerate the mixture overnight or allow to rest for at least 1 hour.

If you have refrigerated the batter, set it 30 minutes to an hour before you plan to use it, as you are aiming for it to come to room temperature or close.

Preheat the oven to 450°F. Place the baking pan inside the oven as it preheats; we want the pans to be hot before pouring the batter in. You will also want to position your oven rack to the upper half of the oven.

Spray the hot pans with nonstick cooking spray or whatever you are using to grease the pans with. Then pour the batter in, filling the cups around half to 2/3 full. Bake for 15 minutes. The Yorkshire puddings should puff up and turn golden brown. Serve warm.

Tips & Notes

  • Overnight rest – It’s worth it! I do feel this deepens the flavor as well as makes the Yorkshire puddings rise higher when baked. I also like how this makes them easy to make ahead of a big holiday meal. That being said, you can still have success with this recipe if you only rest the batter for shorter periods, one hour being a good minimum.
  • You can make this batter in a blender or food processor if you like.
  • What pans to use? I have baked this recipe in standard size muffin tins as well as popover pans, which have a much deeper well or cup. It will work just fine in either with the same bake time. If you use mini muffin trays, or larger pans like oversized ramekins you can still have success but you may need to adjust the bake time.

How often do I need to clean my washing machine?

As a rule of thumb, you’ll want to clean a top-loading washer at least every six months, but even more often (like every three months) if you have hard water as that can create mineral deposit buildups over time. For a front-loading washer (or a high efficiency top-loading washer), it’s best to clean them once a month. For areas of the country that are more hot and humid you may want to clean more often as it’s more likely for mold to grow in those conditions.

Is bleach or vinegar better for cleaning your washing machine?

It’s best to use bleach and vinegar in separate cycles (they are toxic together!) because they both serve a different purpose. The bleach is a disinfectant which means it’s actually killing things like mold or germs, and while the vinegar is highly acidic and is able to kill most germs and some mold, the vinegar is more helpful in eliminating odors and keeping smells at bay.

Since vinegar is more natural and little gentler on your machine, if you have a lot of bacteria and germ buildup and need the power of bleach, just make sure to check your machine manual and make sure it’s approved for the use of bleach.

What you’ll need to clean your washing machine tub

*always open nearby windows or doors if possible for ventilation when using bleach.

CAUTION: Never use bleach and vinegar together at the same time! When mixed together, the two produce toxic chlorine gas, which is dangerous to inhale even in smaller amounts.

How to clean a top-loading washing machine:

  1. Run a bleach cycle: Fill the drum with the hottest water temperature and stop the machine before it starts to agitate. Add 1 quart of chlorine bleach to the water.
  2. Finish the wash cycle: Set your machine to its longest wash setting and allow the machine to finish a full cycle (including a spin cycle, rinse cycle, and drain cycle).
  3. Run a vinegar cycle: Fill the drum again with hot water (stopping it before it agitates) but this time add 4 cups of white vinegar to your machine. Allow the machine to finish on the longest wash cycle.
  4. Clean dispenser drawers: All the small little drawers or cup compartments that are for detergent, fabric softener, and bleach should be cleaned ever month or so to keep them clean and in proper use. Heat 1 cup of vinegar in a small saucepan or microwave to hot (not boiling) and pour into the dispenser cup and let sit for a few minutes to soak any buildup in the start of the cup (you can also use small bottle brush or old toothbrush to scrub any visible reside as well).

    You can also scrub any dirty buildup around the top of the washer tub area with a small brush as well. Once you’ve let the vinegar sit and scrubbed your desired areas, run a full wash cycle again.

How to clean a front-loading washing machine:

  1. Run a bleach cycle: Fill the bleach dispenser drawer to the fill line with liquid chlorine bleach and also add 1/2 cup of bleach to the detergent drawer.
  2. Finish the wash cycle: Set your machine to its longest wash setting (on the hottest water temperature ) and allow the machine to finish a full cycle (including a spin cycle, rinse cycle, and drain cycle).
  3. Run a vinegar cycle: Fill the detergent and fabric softener drawer to the fill line with distilled white vinegar. For extra cleaning power you can also add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the inside of the drum. Allow the machine to finish on the longest wash cycle on the hottest water setting.

  • Allow the washer drum to dry: Keep the lid or door of your machine open at the end of each cycle so that the drum tub and seal area can fully dry out. This will help keep mold from growing as mold enjoys a damp environment to thrive.
  • Wipe out the drum: If you run a heavily soiled load, use a cloth and a non-abrasive cleaning spray to wipe out the drum and remove any residue from the wash cycle.

How do you clean your washing machine with Affresh tablets?

Using Affresh washing machine cleaner tablets is another easy way to keep your washing machine drum clean.

  • Add the washing machine cleaner drum tablet to an empty washer (top-loading or front-loading).
  • Run a “clean washer” cycle on machines that have that option.
    • If your machine doesn’t have that option to select, run a normal or heavy cycle load on the hottest setting on non HE washers and the largest load and longest mode on an HE washer with the hottest water setting.
  • Wipe any reside out of your drum with a soft cloth. Repeat steps up to three times with more cleaning tablets for heavily soiled machines or when odors are present.

If you’re seeing little brown spots on your laundry, you may have some rust starting to form in the drum of your machine. Inspect your drum with a flashlight and check for rust spots. Do I need to clean my washing machine drain hose as well?

It’s a good idea to clean and sanitize the drain hose of the washing machine as well (yours either hooks into a pipe on the wall or into a laundry sink nearby). Disconnect the hose from the drain pipe or laundry sink and place it in a bucket on the floor so excess water can drain out. Use a drain snake to dislodge anything that may be stuck in the hose and use warm vinegar with some baking soda sprinkled on top and an old toothbrush to clean any mildew around the opening of the drain. Rinse with clean water and replace the hose.

While using straight vinegar on rubber gaskets and seals can start to break down the material over time, mixing the vinegar with the water dilutes it quite a bit and since you aren’t using it every day, it shouldn’t cause long-term damage to your machine when used properly.

If you don’t have any odors present or don’t have vinegar on hand, you can just start at step 3 of the instructions and run a bleach cycle to clean your machine with the instructions above. Just make sure to do an extra rinse and spin cycle once your wash cycle is complete to make sure you’ve thoroughly rinsed out any bleach reside from your machine.

Ingredients in a Paloma

  • Tequila – Tequila blanco is the base of this drink.
  • Grapefruit Juice – Fresh squeezed if you have it.
  • Sparkling Water – Any kind of club soda will do.
  • Agave Nectar – For a little added sweetness.
  • Fresh Lime Juice – Adds a little extra flavor.
  • Course Salt – For the rim. I always keep this salt on hand.

A traditional Paloma is made with grapefruit soda (instead of grapefruit juice and sparkling water). I like this recipe as well, but having tasted both I strongly prefer the grapefruit juice version as it tastes fresher and a little more flavorful.

Instructions

Begin by prepping the salt rim. I use a little honey or agave to cover half of the outer rim of a glass. Dip into course salt to prepare the rim, ensuring that none goes into the glass.

In a cocktail shaker, combine your tequila, grapefruit juice, lime juice and agave. Shake with ice for 10-15 seconds.

Pour into a glass filled with ice. Top the glass with sparkling water and stir.

Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

What does a Paloma taste like?

A Paloma cocktail tastes like a grapefruit version of a margarita. It’s a bit less sweet and lighter with the addition of sparkling water. It’s a delicious tequila cocktail.

History of a Paloma cocktail

Paloma translates to “Dove” in Spanish. This drink likely originated in the 1950s, made first by bartender Don Javier Delgado Corona in Tequila, Mexico. It may have been named after the popular folk song “La Paloma.” However this cocktail was created, we’re glad it was and has now stood the test of time with decades of popularity.

Tips for Making

  • Salting the rim is not necessary, but I love what it adds to this cocktail. I never skip it. I like to use course kosher salt or margarita salt.
  • Fresh grapefruit juice is worth the effort and more delicious for sure. That said, I use store-bought juice often. No one will judge you.
  • If you don’t have tequila blanco available, you can substitute it for lightly aged reposado tequila. We don’t recommend anejo tequila (anything that has been aged for a long time).
  • My favorite glass to serve a Paloma in is a simple rocks glass.
  • If you don’t have agave nectar, you can substitute for honey syrup or simple syrup.

Paloma Variations

  • Paloma with Grapefruit Soda – You can use a sweetened grapefruit soda (like Jarritos or Squirt) in place of club soda and grapefruit juice. Omit agave syrup if you use this variation.
  • Mezcal Paloma – Create a smokier, more intense cocktail by replacing tequila with mezcal.
  • Spicy Paloma – Muddle some sliced jalapeño peppers in the grapefruit juice before mixing the rest of your cocktail. Serve with a jalapeño on top.
  • Pink Paloma – Choose ruby red grapefruit juice to create a pink cocktail.
