I flipped it and dyed the back. The item I was dying was white denim overalls, so it was quite thick. If you were dyeing something smaller or thinner, like a cotton bandana or tank top it won’t be necessary and you could rely on the ice water and dye seeping through. Good luck and happy experimenting!

Thank you for the guide. It reminded me how much I want to try ice tie dying with my girls this (southern hemisphere) summer! I’m wondering, did you flip the overalls over and dye the back? Or did the dye seep through and colour the back evenly with the front? Thanks!

I love tie-dye!! This is the second summer that my sister and I tie dyed a batch of shirts for us and our kids to wear on our “cousin field trip adventure days” this summer. It’s so much fun letting the kids choose what they wanted to do and trying all the different techniques!
I’ll second what Annie said – Shout Color Catchers are a lifesaver! We’ve also found that leaving the dye on for a full 24 hours helpss the colors stay vibrant after rinsing (leaving for only 4-6 hours leads to lighter/more pastel colors). I also throw in some vinegar in the fabric softener cup when I wash for the first time – it helps to set the dye!

Hi, from my own experience- I tie dye a lot. One, use scissors to snip away the rubber bands- it’s just easier. Two, for larger projects (old sheets) I like to use “sacrificial” yarn instead of rubber bands- sometimes those aren’t big enough. My last tip is Shout or Carbona Color Catchers in the washing machine. They’re dryer sheet-sized cloths that trap dyes in the washer I use for regular laundry & will toss two or three in with new tie dye stuff. I like to tie dye onesies & shirts for kids as gifts- if they spit up on it, the spot is a lot harder to see. I always keep some white bandanas on hand for the kids who will inevitably wander into the yard & want to join in the fun. ABM, thank you for your work. You spark joy.
