Do you find that the potting soil lasts when you buy it from garden centres? I don’t know if it’s because I’m in Australia, but it dries out. Even string of pearls (which is usually pretty easy-going) can completely use up the compost’s goodness in its first summer.

I know it needs drainage, but I find it works ok to mix a little bit more water retentive compost through, so the mix ends up being more compost than drainage (but I definitely agree with you on perlite – it’s something every gardener should have in).

Perhaps look at a thrift store for a pedestal candle holder, which you could then spray paint gloss white?

I love taking a long, cascading string, picking it up and placing it over the top of the plant. No need to cut it! Eventually, the stem will begin to root into the soil. This is an excellent option for making the top of your plant fuller. Good luck!
